San Diego is famous for its beautiful beaches, museums, and its zoo. It is California’s second largest city and the nation’s eighth. Its name means “Saint Didacus” in Spanish and it is located on the Pacific Ocean coast of Southern California. San Diego is also adjacent to the Mexican border and 120 miles from Los Angeles.

San Diego is the birthplace of this state and is known for its long relationship with the United States Navy as well as its involvement in fields like biotechnology development and healthcare.
 
There are 52 residential areas in San Diego and each one has several neighborhoods of its own. This city has over 100 recognized communities. These Community Planning Areas are designated by geographical boundaries like street designs and canyons. Balboa Park is comprised of canyons and mesas while Downtown San Diego is on the bay. Older communities include North Park and Hillcrest; the northern suburbs offer Rancho Penasquitos, Rancho Bernardo, and Mira Mesa Scripps Ranch. Other areas include City Heights, Southeast San Diego, the College Area, Interstate 8, Mission Valley, the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Navajo, and Clairmont.
 
The San Diego Unified School District is the second largest in the state and serves most of the city with eleven K-8 facilities, 24 middle schools, 107 elementary schools, 28 high schools, 45 charter institutes, and 13 alternative facilities. There are hundreds of private schools like the Calvary Christian Academy, Escondido Adventists Academy, the Montessori American School, and Halstrom Academy. Public universities include the University of California (UCSD) and San Diego State University (SDSU) as well as the San Diego Community College District.
 
There are many parks and trails throughout this region. Miramar Lake offers fishing, boating, and picnicking. There is also a trail that is five miles long and wraps around the lake. Visitors enjoy the panoramic views of the northern communities, Miramar, Mira Mesa, and University City. Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is popular with hikers because of its 2,000 acres of wilderness and protected land. The city also encompasses the Mission Trails Regional Park and Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve.
 
Sand Diego has an almost endless supply of shopping venues such as the Mesa Market Center, Fashion Valley, Seaport Village, Westfield Horton Plaza, Kobey’s Swap Meet, Clairemont Town Square, College Grove Center, and Mission Valley. There are many golf venues like Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club, the Palacio del Mar Golf Course, the Grand Golf Course, Mission Bay Golf Course & Practice Center, the Riverwalk Golf Club, and the Torrey Pines Golf Course. 
 
There are many art and music venues in San Diego such as the San Diego Museum of Art, The Museum of Photographic Arts, the San Diego Air Space Museum, The San Diego Symphony, and the San Diego Opera.
