Murrieta is located in Riverside County and is one of the fastest growing cities in California. In 2010 it recorded over 103,000 residents which was a 133.7 percent increase since 2000.
 
The City of Murrieta is commuter-friendly and most communities have easy freeway access with low congestion as far as traffic is concerned. Residents travel for work to places like Temecula, Camp Pendleton, Los Angeles County, Orange County, and San Diego County. Murrieta is also considered the safest city in Riverside County and in 2009 was named as the second safest in the nation. This commuter town is part of the Los Angeles-San Diego Mega region and is bordered by Temecula, Wildomar, and Menifee.
 
The Murrieta Valley Unified Schools District provides public education with eleven elementary schools, three middle schools, one independent study school, and three high schools. Murrieta Mesa High School opened its doors for the first time during the 2009-2010 school year. There are several private facilities including Cal Oaks Christian Academy, Calvary Murrieta Christian School, and Murrieta Springs Adventist Christian Academy. The nearest community college is Mt. San Jacinto College and the closest public university is the University of California, Riverside.
 
There are many extra-curricular activities in Murrieta with three 18-hole golf courses including the Bear Creek Golf & Country Club which was designed by Jack Nicklaus. This is a club that was frequented by Presidents Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan. The city also has the SCGA Golf Course and the California Oaks Golf Course.
 
The Temecula Promenade Mall opened in 1999 and has two anchor spots with Sears and Macy’s North and Macy’s South. The City of Murrieta joins with Temecula to create the anchor of the Inland Empire region on the southwest side. Other shopping venues include the Murrieta Springs Plaza and the Murrieta Town Center Shopping Center. 
 
Murrieta is very family friendly and offers many sports league for basketball, baseball, football, soccer, and field hockey. Football players can get involved with AYF, Pop Warner, AAU/USA Football, and flag football. There is also a Southern California Junior Golfers Players’ Club that is sponsored by Southern California Golf Schools. Families enjoy the Mulligan Family Fun Center which features go-kart racing, miniature golf, and laser tag as well as a movie theater.
